Such an incredible opportunity, which I’m going to attend\u00a0tomorrow. Apparently this museum is on its last legs, according to the Times<\/a>. No surprise, there.\u00a0Nice way to go out, by making history.\u00a0\u00a0I really<\/em> want\u00a0to see\u00a0Donatello’s visualization of\u00a0Abraham and Isaac, \u00a0a father ready and willing to kill his son, which I expect will\u00a0be a representation\u00a0of all war, from pagan times to the present, a long history of human sacrifice and violence–as well as its specific meaning in the Old Testament. Hyperallergic<\/em>:<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an improbable exhibition, with 23 early Renaissance pieces\u00a0that have\u00a0rarely (if ever) left\u00a0Italy, let alone\u00a0crossed the Atlantic to arrive at this small Upper West Side museum. After their return to Florence\u2019s Museo dell\u2019Opera del Duomo, it\u2019s likely most of these pieces will never travel again because of\u00a0their fragility and size. The\u00a0exceptional nature of the exhibition\u00a0is reason enough to visit, but the\u00a0unexpected humanity of\u00a0Donatello\u2019s sculptures up close makes it essential.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And some other qualities, as well, make it once in a lifetime, for those of us who can’t fly to Italy. When they say pieces<\/em>, I think what they actually are talking about are large, heavy, and apparently\u00a0fragile sculptures craved from stone. But it sounds as if they\u00a0are too fragile for even a second\u00a0journey like this. (Is all the world as temporary as flesh? Yes. But does Donatello have to remind me with stone?
