Iena, Robert Ernst Marx<\/p><\/div>\n

I have to\u00a0say Robert Ernst Marx<\/a>, now 90, is still at the height of his powers, based on a recent visit to\u00a0his current one-man show at Rochester Picture Framing<\/a>. It\u00a0sounded like an unlikely\u00a0venue\u00a0for such an esteemed local artist. Yet it’s a beautiful, perfectly-lit space, and Marx appeared to have sold around $20,000 worth of work already. So it appears to be a perfect fit. His vision is as it has always been: dark, full of spectral inquisitors and\u00a0aristocratic succubi\u00a0who seem half-Elizabethan, half-Gothic. His world reminds me of Goya’s black period\u00a0when the Spaniard\u00a0painted Saturn feasting on his son\u00a0and Titans\u00a0going after one another with cudgels in the dusk. Marx, too, paints the monsters generated by the sleep of reason–he’s as skeptical and unforgiving as a French\u00a0philosophe. <\/em>His figures\u00a0emanate\u00a0menace with nothing more than a steady gaze. In his minimalist portraits\u00a0of spiritual deformity\u00a0he invests all the complexity into the way he applies the paint while indicating as little as possible about his imaginary sitter. His color is surprisingly rich and subtle.\u00a0In his drawings the\u00a0line is masterful and utterly free and\u00a0in the example above, occasionally lovely.\u00a0That’s in his wheelhouse too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
