It may then be a valuable delusion,\u201d<\/em> the great painter Richard Diebenkorn counseled in his ten rules for beginning creative projects<\/a>. \u201cOne doesn\u2019t arrive \u2014 in words or in art \u2014 by necessarily knowing where one is going,\u201d<\/em> the artist Ann Hamilton wrote a generation later in her magnificent meditation on the generative power of not-knowing<\/a>. \u201cIn every work of art something appears that does not previously exist, and so, by default, you work from what you know to what you don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

What is true of art is even truer of life, for a human life is the greatest work of art there is. (In my own life, looking back on my ten most important learnings<\/a> from the first ten years of Brain Pickings<\/em>, I placed the practice of the small, mighty phrase \u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d at the very top.)
