Standing Taffy<\/u><\/p>\n

This cairn of taffy squeezes
\ninto shapes that Hammersley,
\nStella, or Matisse
\nmight have liked, loopy
\ncurves of subtle tones,
\ncolor contained, simple as a tune
\nor cream uncoiling into a cup.<\/p>\n

Stacked, unstable acrobats
\nlean, and come near
\nto teetering onto stone.
\nThere\u2019s a timid cheer
\nin their defeated smiles
\nthat spiral through caramel,
\nraspberry and peach,
\nthose fields of foggy color
\nwrapped in wax
\nand twist-tied into chipper bows.<\/p>\n

Sweets, created to melt
\ninto fleet flavors,
\nno one can respect,
\nnor put to use,
\nsignifying nil but the need to please.
\nDimpled, dented, crumpled,
\nthey sag as if under more
\nthan the punished bulk
\nof one (or two) of their own.
\nThose wings will never fly, guys,
\nbut you’re serenely ready
\nin the purity of your hues
